Amy Winehouse was found dead in her London apartment on Saturday (July 23).
Amy Winehouse rose to international acclaim in 2006 with the breakout album "Back to Black", featuring her now tragic signature song "Rehab". "Back to Black" went multi-platinum and earned Winehouse five Grammys. She had long struggled with substance abuse and mental health issues. And she did not hide this. Some of her songs did have power, and some of that power-- the way the emotion of the music translated and was so affecting-- came from Amy Winehouse's willingness to put herself on the line, to be personal and vulnerable to a not always forgiving public, to make the music that it was honest for her to make, even before it was commercially viable, to inhabit her own worst moments and sing them over and over again for other people, even when part of her struggle became struggling with the ways in which she had become public, and the ways that people treat public figures as if they owe something to somebody.
Amy Winehouse cancelled her European comeback tour in June following a disastrous show in Belgrade in which the singer was obviously under the influence. The cause of death remains unknown.
